Why doesn't my iPhone mic work?

I am trying to webcam with a friend and she can't hear me. I try the skype configuration thing and i cant hear myself. It's new earphones and i tried getting the dirt out of the socket. I'm not sure what to do. I tried making it my default device by going into the control panel.. I don't know what to do, please help!
