Why does my htc desire HD keep saying speakers are plugged into my phone when they arent?

okay, this is getting really annoying up in the top right hand corner of my htc desire the speaker icon is there when i have never plugged speakers into my phone in my life. It is a pain because when i call someone i have to put my phone on speaker phone and my music wont play out loud i have to plug in earphones does anyone know how i can fix this?
