Anime cosplay weapons?

I'm trying to make my own cosplay outfit based on my own anime character I've made, but I'm not sure what to make the weapon out of. The weapon I'm trying to build is a scythe. I'm more concerned about what material to use for the blade. It's got to be sturdy, but somewhat lightweight, as well as easy to paint. If it's not too much, I would also appreciate recommendations on the shaft material as well. I don't want the shaft to be perfectly straight, but it's of no genuine concern to me either way. Any help is appreciated!
