I have ipod problems? volume turns all the way down and turns off?

okay, so i have the ipod touch 2nd generation & it has the built in speakers. when i turn on the music to listen to it on the built in speakers or on my earphones the volume starts turning all the way down and it turns off. it's now only working on the dock, and not on the built in speakers or my headphones. any suggestions?
